Mummy MOT®

A comprehensive postnatal health assessment designed to help you recover with confidence after pregnancy and birth — whether you’re six weeks or several years postpartum.

What is a Mummy MOT®?

The Mummy MOT® is a specialist postnatal assessment carried out by a trained women’s health physiotherapist. Over a comprehensive 60–90 minute appointment, it looks at how your body has recovered after pregnancy and childbirth — going far beyond a simple pelvic
floor check.

Your physiotherapist will assess your pelvic floor muscle function, any abdominal muscle separation (Diastasis Recti), core strength and breathing, posture and movement, and your back, pelvic and hip function. Where appropriate, and only with your consent, they can also
assess a caesarean or perineal scar.

From there, you’ll receive an individual treatment and rehabilitation plan built around you— helping you return safely to exercise, work and everyday activities. Postnatal symptoms are far more common than many women realise, and far more treatable than many expect,
even months or years after having children.

Who is a Mummy MOT® for?

A Mummy MOT® is suitable for anyone who has had a baby — whether you had a vaginal birth or a caesarean section, and whether it’s your first baby or you’ve had several pregnancies.

It’s especially helpful if you’re experiencing symptoms such as:

  • Pelvic floor weakness
  • Urinary leakage or urgency
  • Pelvic heaviness or prolapse symptoms
  • Abdominal separation (a “tummy gap”)
  • Back, pelvic or hip pain
  • Pain during intercourse
  • Ongoing postnatal discomfort

You don’t need to have symptoms to book. Many women come to check their recovery and make sure they’re ready before returning to exercise

What to Expect at Your Appointment

We use a comprehensive, evidence-based approach throughout your care.

Your assessment (60–90 minutes) Your appointment begins with a conversation about your pregnancy, birth, symptoms and goals — at your own pace. Your physiotherapist will then carry out a thorough physical assessment, which may include pelvic floor muscle function, abdominal muscle separation, core strength and breathing, posture and movement, and back, pelvic and hip function.

Findings and treatment planning Your physiotherapist will explain what she has found, answer your questions, and create a personalised treatment and rehabilitation plan tailored to your symptoms, goals and preferences.

Returning to what matters Your plan is designed to help you get back safely to exercise, work and everyday life — whether that’s running, gym classes, lifting your children or high-impact sport.

How to prepare Please wear comfortable clothing suitable for a movement assessment. If you’ve had a C-section, clothing that allows easy access to the scar is helpful (only if you’re comfortable). You’re welcome to bring any previous scan reports, birth notes or relevant medical information.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. Many women book to make sure they’ve recovered well before returning to exercise.

Usually from 6 weeks postpartum, but you can benefit months or even years later.

I’ve had a C-section. Can I still have one?

Yes. The assessment is designed for both vaginal and caesarean births.

Will there be an internal examination?

If appropriate, and only with your full consent, your physiotherapist may offer a pelvic floor assessment. You can decline at any time.

How much does Pelvic Health Physiotherapy cost

Our 60-minute comprehensive assessment is £110

When Should You Book?

You can usually book from around 6 weeks after birth, once you’ve had your GP or midwife postnatal check. But it’s never too late — a Mummy MOT® is just as valuable months or even years after having children.

It’s a great idea to book before you return to running, Gym classes, heavy lifting or High-impact sport. If any symptoms develop at any stage after childbirth, a Mummy MOT® can help you understand what’s happening and what to do about it.
